Do you ever think about how often “common sense” is used to shame those who don’t have it? But then, how did you come to have common sense?
It comes from exposure over a lifetime to these concepts.
When I encounter someone who seems to lack in something that I feel can be simply and directly corrected, I give them that information.
I am the product of people who must have thought it ridiculous that by age X I didn’t know Y, but the truth is, when you grow up in a household of neglect, there’s a lot you don’t see. There’s only so much you can learn or even know to learn given a snapshot into the world through books. There’s a lot that isn’t even spoken about until you make a mistake and have to sit in the awkwardness of that social situation.
Others who may not have the same piece of common sense may have a different origin story than I do, but I think about how much I benefitted from people who simply shared and corrected and supported rather than shamed for not knowing.
And from there, I hope to pass this on to others as well.
